A visit to Holbox Island would not be complete without getting a tour of the vast marine life there. The mineral rich water is the habitat of a large selection of sea creatures. You can get a chance to see wonderful marvels like dolphins, whale sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays. A lot of people love to become one with the marine life by embarking upon diving and snorkeling tours. You might even get a chance to swim with the whale sharks, a species of sharks that is harmless to humans and very humble in nature. Holbox is in fact famed for its population of whale sharks.
This island is considered the perfect place to have a peaceful get-away because of its magnificent scenery and ecosystem. The streets are made of silky sand and feel refreshing to your feet as you take a stroll through the town. Bird Island (Isla Pajaros) is a fantastic marvel to tour because you get to observe a host of exotic birds in their natural Yalahau Lagoon habitat.
This tropical paradise shares a similar history with Cancun: it is also a location where you can find ancient Mayan cultural artifacts. Even the name of Holbox Island comes from the Mayan term for “black hole” since the Yalahau Lagoon has waters that give off a very dark color. The Mayans also had a superstition about Yalahau Lagoon and believed that the lagoon’s water had properties that made it act like a fountain of youth (or Ojo de Agua Cenote). So it was once believed that anyone who bathed in the lagoon would come out feeling almost a decade younger than their original age!
