It seems that summertime is a good time for all sorts of scammers to come out. It could be due to the fact that everyone is just happy it is warm outside and happy thoughts and activities put our minds at ease. Going on vacation to places that you have never been before can also be breeding grounds for scams to occur. Who really knows the reason, but summertime everyone should beware all types of scams? Look below at some of the most popular scams to beware of that occur during a summer vacation period.

Summer Scams to Beware Of

 Drop and Switch Scams

The drop and switch scam can occur from a taxicab driver or any shop worker. They take your money for the payment of services, then they exchange the money that you have given them with a smaller amount, then claim that you didn’t get them enough money and they will expect you to pay the rest of the money or will return a deliberately lower amount of change. You can avoid the drop and switch scam by speaking out loud on how much money you are paying with when you give them your cash. This is a scam to beware of all year round, not just summer.

 Rental Summer Scams

You are looking for a summer vacation rental at the last minute. You search your local newspaper and on classified online sites like Craig’s List, and you find one, so you go ahead and pay upfront and on the spot for your vacation rental by sending money through a wire transfer, because you don’t want to lose this deal and due to it being a private rental they don’t accept any other forms of payment like a credit card. When your vacation arrives you arrive at the rental, but someone else is at your rental property, and it is the correct owner or the renter of the property, because you have been had by a rental scam. The person who scammed you is off spending your money. Beware summer scams on rentals when you do not rent through a licensed company.

 Restaurant Scams

You finally arrive at your summer vacation location, but you arrive late at night. When you check in they hand you a flyer that offers food and delivery service or maybe the pamphlet is left in your room. You are hungry, tired, and you just want to rest, so you give them a call. The establishment doesn’t accept cash, so you think to yourself, no problem and give them your credit card information over the phone and you wait for your food to arrive. You wait and wait, but your dinner never arrives, so you call the establishment back up, but you have no luck. You have now give scammers your credit card information and they have had plenty of time to charge your credit card with plenty of charges.

 Check-in Fraudsters

The check-in scam is a common summer scam that occurs late at night. You arrive at the hotel and check in. You get into your hotel room and a bit later you receive a call saying they are from the front desk of the hotel and they are telling you that your credit card has been declined. They ask you if you could give them the credit card numbers once again as maybe they didn’t get them correct when you checked in, so you do. You’re tired, so you just do it. The following morning or maybe even when you get back home from your vacation you find out that it wasn’t the front desk that wanted your credit card information, but you have been scammed.

 Internet Wi-Fi Scams

Anytime you go on vacation and you find out where you are staying offers free Wi-Fi, then you get excited, especially in restaurants, stores, and other public venues, but do you know that many times the free Wi-Fi isn’t safe and secure? You may be connecting to a network that is ran by scammers and they will access your online banking, credit card information and your email accounts.
