In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, construction on a new terminal has recently started at the Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport. It is the 8th busiest airport in the country as they have 13 national and 40 international air flights routes available. In 2021, there were an estimated 5.8 million passengers that arrived at the airport. The new terminal construction began on August 29, 2022, and it is expected to be completed in October 2024. There are two stages with the construction project. The first stage should be completed in 2024, and the second stage should be completed between 2025 through 2029. The PVR new terminal expansion is adding 68,000 square meters in space which equates to a growth of 150 percent in total. As a result, the new terminal expansion will be able to handle more than 10 to 12 million traveler arrivals each year. Likewise, there will be 11 to 19 new boarding gates, and 9 to 16 remote gates as well. Travelers will have added space and comfort which can help make their vacation more enjoyable. They are also going to redesign the immigration and customs process. For example, there will be 58 documentation counters added and 8 to 18 security filters lines added. There are increasing the migration modules to 30. Also, they will be implementing scanning luggage technology, so all luggage will be scanned before passengers even arrive at the airport.

Finally, the best part of the new terminal expansion at the airport is an exciting upgrade which is that it will become the first Zero Energy Airport (NET Zero Certification) in Latin America. What does this mean? It means the airport will be able to reduce the emissions and pollutants. In addition, they will be adding solar panels on the roof of the airport that will lower energy costs by 40%. Also, they will implement systems in order to be able to reuse 100 % of the black, blue, and gray water that comes in and out of the new terminal. Lastly, geothermal batteries will also be added that will reduce the use of air conditioning as well. These positive changes show that Puerto Vallarta is modernizing its airport in an environmentally friendly way.
