1. Yelapa – Safest Place to Visit in Mexico

Would you like to experience a small beach town in Mexico? If so, then Yelapa is the perfect place to go. This is also one of the safest places to visit in Mexico. To get to Yelapa, you need to get on a bus to Boca de Tomatlan which is located about half hour south of downtown Puerto Vallarta. Then, from there you will catch a water taxi which only costs about $5 dollars each way. Yelapa is only reachable by water as there are no roads going into the town. In fact, they didn’t even get electricity or phones until 2001. If you are ready to get off the beaten path, then Yelapa is the perfect place to explore when visiting Puerto Vallarta.

2. Las Animas and Quimixto – Paradise in Banderas Bay

Next, two additional beach villages in Banderas Bay are Las Animas and Quimixto. These small towns are within walking distance from one another. To get there, you can walk along the shore on a beautiful coastal hike from Boca de Tomatlan. If you’d rather take a relaxing journey to reach Las Animas and Quimixto, you can also take a water taxi that only costs around $4 dollars for each person, each way. There, visitors will love the tranquil waters of the beautiful beaches that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Also, you can go to the Quimixto waterfall that is a short walk from the beach. They have several restaurants that make authentic Mexican dishes and fresh seafood, too.

3. Mismaloya and El Eden – Tropical Destinations

Mismaloya and El Eden are other great tropical destinations to explore in Puerto Vallarta. In 1987, the action/thriller movie Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger was filmed there. El Eden is situated on the southern edge of PV just inland from Mismaloya Beach. El Eden has beautiful natural pools that the Mismaloya River made. The natural pools are an excellent spot to cool off on a hot and humid Puerto Vallarta day. Visitors will love the beautiful greenery of the Sierra Madre jungle and stone rocks that are fun to jump off into the water. If you work up an appetite, there is a nice restaurant that serves tasty and affordable food and drinks, too.

4. Cuale River – 2,500 Meters Above Sea Level

One of the seven rivers that started in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains is the Cuale River. The river is about 2,500 meters above sea level, and it runs through El Cuale, then in deep ravines until it meets the Pacific Ocean in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Old Town Puerto Vallarta and El Centro/Downtown are divided by the Cuale River. Where the river flows into the ocean is a popular spot for locals who want to go swimming in the clear and shallow waters. You can find this spot just under the Malecon boardwalk bridge. There are also tons of cute shops with souvenirs, clothing, jewelry and more just steps from the river’s edge, too.
